Shardiya Navratri is one of the most popular Hindu festivals which celebrates the nine forms of Maa Durga. The annual Hindu festival is celebrated with much joy and fervor by devotees in the month of Ashwin, as per the Hindu calendar.
Devotees of Goddess Durga believe that it is during this auspicious time when Maa Durga comes to her land with her children Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesh, and Kartikeya. Since ‘Navratri’ literally means ‘Nava’ ie ‘nine,’ and ‘Ratri’ ie ‘night’, hence the festival is celebrated for nine days. This year, the much-awaited festival begins on September 26 and will end on October 5, 2022.
For the uninitiated, Navratri signifies the win of good over evil. The story is that Lord Brahma had blessed the demon Mahishasura with immortality for his immense dedication to the former. But it was on one condition– that only a woman would be able to defeat Mahishasura. However, after getting the blessing Mahishasura started terrorizing people and even the Gods were unable to stop him from his evil deeds.
Thus, the trio– Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Mahesh– together with their energies created Maa Durga who ascended on Earth to fight against Mahishasura. Their battle lasted for nine days and it was on the tenth day, called ‘Vijayadashami’, when Maa Durga defeated and killed Mahishasura. And thus, during this time many devotees observe fasts, meditate, chant, and offer their prayers to Maa Durga to seek her blessings.
Meanwhile, in many states in North India, Ramlila– enacting the story of Lord Ram’s win over the demon King Ravana– is organized during the nine days of Navratri. And on the tenth day, Dussehra is celebrated by burning Ravana’s effigies. It’s interesting to note, that both the stories behind Navratri signify the victory of good over evil– thus reminding devotees to stay on the path of Dharma and knowledge.
While Navratri is celebrated by Hindus across the country, there are different customs that are followed in different parts. For instance, in North Indian states people attend Ramlilas and pray to Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, and Lord Laxman; in Gujarat people celebrate Navratri by dancing to the tunes of Garba for nine nights; in Bengal, devotees celebrate Navratri by organizing Durga Puja.
